Per artist: "Chinese floral paintings are either made with expressive style (Xieyi) or fine style (Gongbi). In this painting, I combined both styles to create a subtle harmonious painting with the lily in fine technique and the vase in expressive style."
 
ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Artist Wu Lan-Chiann studied painting with Lingnan School master Ou Haonian at the Chinese Culture University in Taipei and with American painter Arnold Mesches at New York University. While the highly regarded Lingnan school of Chinese painting is evident in her early work, Wu Lan-Chiann has emerged with her own distinctive style that she honed over the past two decades. With her decisive brushwork and profound technique in the Chinese ink method, the artist’s work is marked by a strong poetic narrative, forging a unique visual language drawing from both Eastern and Western influences.

        “Reflections is the first UK solo exhibition of Wu Lan-Chiann, Chinese ink painting artist. This exhibit shows a selection of Wu Lan-Chiann’s work produced over the past twenty years.

        At the core of Wu Lan-Chiann’s work, is a deep personal contemplation of universal themes and values that connect people across time and place. While continuing a tradition that is centuries old, her paintings are distinctly contemporary both in concept and execution. Starting from a young age, she combined Asian and Western modes of representation into a personal style that is intensely poetic. Blending two very different painting traditions, she has emerged as an artist with an authentic style marked by decisive brushwork and delicate application of colour.

        In her recent work, Wu Lan-Chiann is interested in capturing the precious but fleeting moments of life through the depiction of free-floating petals and leaves. She sees a comparison between the rhythm of nature and the human cycle of life. Her work captures special moments and at the same time represents the invariable and eternal cycle of life and nature.”

Born and raised in Taiwan, artist Wu Lan-Chiann received her BFA -with highest honors- from the Chinese Culture University in Taipei, Taiwan, and holds a MA from New York University (School of Art and Art Education). Her work is acquired by notable private collectors in Europe, Asia and the USA. She had a well-received solo exhibition in the UK between November 2015 and May 2016, and her painting Before the Storm (2015) was added to the permanent collection of Kansas City’s Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, a museum renowned for its extensive Asian art holdings.
