Takashi Murakami has firmly established himself in the international art scene with his spectacular and distinctively Japanese aesthetic. The Japanese artist is best-known for colorful, animé-inspired pop art and fashion collaborations with brands like Louis Vuitton, with his signature icons, including pandas, skulls and flowers. Murakami's super-flat creations and anime-type figures are featured in museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and Los Angeles' The Broad, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

The pandas, according to Murakami, are “spirit residents of the other-dimensional monogram multicolored world” who “tour through time and space.” As with much of Murakami’s work, it is a story infused with cuteness, or to use the Japanese term, kawaii; indeed, Panda Giant may be the most kawaii of the artist’s works. But there is more to his plays on his native country’s obsession with cuteness than meets the eye – it is all part of an exploration of Japanese culture.
