This is a beautiful pair of offset prints by Murakami.  According to interviews, Murakami felt inspired by the grotesque portraits painted by Irish-British painter Francis Bacon, where he noticed that it was very similar to an old Japanese sculpture where many figures emerge from two mouths. “I could use this in my own work,” thought the artist, who began studying the way Bacon would distort human faces in his paintings. He incorporated the iconic, beloved Mr DOB and transformed the inspiration into an interplay of communication between his characters.

Takashi Murakami is a world famous artist who has firmly established himself in the international art scene with his spectacular and distinctively Japanese aesthetic. As one of the founding members of the “Superflat” movement which placed him within the legacy of Pop art, he creates art with an exceptionally original artistic language inspired by his homeland’s anime, manga culture and informed by Japan’s centuries old artistic lineage, Buddhism, and historical Japanese art. In true pop-art style, he blurs the boundaries between fine art and mass culture, integrating marketing and consumerism into his artistic concept. Murakami's super-flat creations and anime-type figures are featured in museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Los Angeles' The Broad, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, USA, amongst many others.
